Spilling Time

1991 (10 negatives)

From Hags book ‘How Things Are’

‘Time is a funny thing; the way it disappears and reappears when you’re not looking. It seems to be related to the properties of light. All my life, since studying science at school, I have been interested in the nature of light. The contradiction of it behaving both as a wave and as a particle. The difficulties of the speed of light being constant and time being a movable feast. To understand this we are led to define perception itself. So we arrive at the basic philosophical questions of our being. Why am I here and why does it often feel so strange, so uncomfortable, so beautiful and so divine?

Original proof for the R.K.H. Ltd advertising image. (1990)Hag re-worked this image as above seating the sun dial on the ground, changing the sky, adding  more shadow splashes , the diver and spectacles.

Three photographs were commissioned on the theme of time to Advertise TSMS, Television Sales & Marketing Services UK, who sold TV advertising time slots. It was a national campaign with full page adverts in national papers as well as trade magazines and of course a TV commercial.I returned to this image to make  Is This The Time

The distortions of the hanging clocks were created digitally. The heavy retouching especially on the butchers face was to compensate for the poor paper quality and course screen reproduction commonly found in the national press in 1990. It was standard practice.
