The apple is innocent. It was as innocent in the Garden of Eden as it was in South Africa, during apartheid, when here there was a public boycott of this fruit from that source. Self–awareness can be viewed as the fall from blissful ignorance, pleasantly described as grace. To blame the female for the fall of man, manipulated by a snake – as a symbol of lust and desire – is an act of blatant political manipulation. To use these stories to justify female repression, not to mention the pain of childbirth, makes as much sense as the subjugation of black South Africans. The male, human or snake, needs to take responsibility for his own emotions in a climate of love and respect.
